McLemore and Fraser Lead Men's Basketball to 89-70 Win Over UMBC

ORONO, Maine – The University of Maine men's basketball team used a 10-to-1 run in the second half to get some breathing room and cruised the rest of the way to an 89-70 win over UMBC on Saturday. Maine is now 8-5 overall and 2-0 in league play while UMBC falls to 2-13 and 1-2 in America East play. Gerald McLemore (San Diego, Calif.) was Maine's America East Player of the Game with 29 points.
UMBC took a 12-10 lead through the first five minutes, but the Black Bears would take a 16-12 lead on a pair of Justin Edwards (Whitby, Ontario) free throws.
The Retrievers cut the lead to 20-19 before Alasdair Fraser (Falkirk, Scotland) converted two from the charity stripe with 11 minutes left.
Maine then went on a 13-to-2 run to take a 33-21 lead with Raheem Singleton (Boston, Mass.) scoring six points in the run.
The Black Bears pushed the lead to 41-23 on a Singleton three-pointer with just under five minutes to play, but UMBC answered with a 7-to-2 run, cutting the lead to 43-30 at half.
Fraser had 14 points and eight rebounds to lead Maine in the first half while Singleton had 11 points and three rebounds.
The Black Bears opened up the second half on a 9-to-4 run courtesy of seven McLemore points.
UMBC responded by scoring the next seven points, but four points from Kilian Cato (Espoo, Finland), and three-pointers from McLemore and Jon McAllian (Bangor, Maine) keyed the 10-to-1 run and made it 62-42 with 12:03 left
The Black Bears expanded the lead to 72-50, and with eight minutes left Andrew Rogers (Philadelphia, Pa.) was cutting across the foul line and threw an alley-oop to Edwards who reversed dunked it, putting an exclamation point on the win.
Fraser finished with a double-double of 16 points and 11 rebounds while Singleton had 17 points, four assists and three rebounds. Edwards added 11 points, three rebounds and three assists.
UMBC was led by its America East Player of the Game Chase Plummer who had 17 points.
