
Maine and Boston College Compete on Day One of Swim Meet

ORONO, Maine -- The University of Maine swimming & diving teams competed on day one of its meet against visiting Boston College on Friday evening at Wallace Pool. The women currently lead the Eagles 64-27 while the men trail Boston College 70-21.
Shannon Bender (Cumberland, R.I.) and Carmen Linden (Ottawa, Ontario) kicked off the night with a one-two finish in the women's 1000-yard freestyle event. Bender touched the wall ahead of the pack with a time of 10:38.73 while Linden followed at 10:43.08. The men followed with a second and third place finish in the same event as Yuri Chornobil (Rochester, N.Y.) placed second in 10:02.35 while Michael Capossela (Riverside, Conn.) touching the wall third in 10:13.66.
The women's relay teams continued to impress as Courtney Mellish (Barrie, Ontario), Dana Wright (Twin Falls, Idaho), Erica Smrcina (North Falmouth, Mass.) and Helaina Sacco (Rochester, Mass.) took home first place honors in the 400-yard medley relay with a time of 4:03.14.
Sacco kept up the winning ways as the senior won the 100-yard freestyle event with a time of 54.30 while teammate Naja Harvey (Orono, Minn.) was the runner-up with a time of 54.53. On the men's side, Andrew Meehan (Brewer, Maine) grabbed a third-place finish in the 100-yard free, touching the wall at 48.71.
The women kept up the winning ways as Jenn Trodden (Reading, Mass.) took top honors in the 200-yard IM with a time of 2:13.04 while freshman Eric Gaulin (Northport, Maine) was the top finisher in the event on the men's side, placing fourth in 2:03.40. The women's squad closed out its events on day one with another relay win, this time taking top honors in the 200-yard freestyle relay with a time of 1:39.54. Swimming the event for the Black Bears was Harvey, Trodden, Lauren Dwyer (Orono, Maine) and Emily Buczkowski (Woolwich, Maine).
The two teams finish off the meet tomorrow as diving gets underway at 9 a.m. from Wallace Pool. The Black Bears will honor their 2012 Senior Class at 10:45 before finishing up the swimming events starting at 11 a.m.
