Swimming & Diving Competes at Bowdoin

BRUNSWICK, Maine -- The University of Maine swimming & diving teams competed in a non-scoring meet at Bowdoin College on Saturday afternoon. The Black Bears had several top finishers on the afternoon as they totaled 18 wins against the Polar Bears.
Senior captain Lauren Thornbrough (San Diego, Calif.) led the women's team with a pair of wins and a third place finish. Thornbrough won the 400-yard IM with a time of 4:47.27 and also placed first in the 100-yard fly at 1:00.54. Thornbrough touched the wall third in the 50-yard fly at 28.03. Naja Harvey (Orono, Minn.) also had a pair of wins as she took top honors in both the 50-yard breaststroke (31.10) and the 200-yard freestyle (1:59.08). Harvey's time in the 50-yard breaststroke was a new school-record, besting that of Caitlin Shelley who set the old mark of 31.16 in 2010.
Several Black Bears picked up a win and a second place as Linda Gaudreau (Marshfield, Mass.) won the 500-yard freestyle at 5:29.73 and was second in the 400-yard IM with a time of 4:53.10. Carmen Linden won the 200-yard IM at 2:16.36 and touched the wall second in the 200-yard free at 1:59.25. Alicia Hahn (Falmouth, Maine) was solid in the backstroke, taking first in the 100-yard back (1:03.44) and second in the 200-yard back (2:15.49). Erica Smrcina (North Falmouth, Mass.) won the 50-yard fly in 27.29 while touching the wall second in the 100-yard breaststroke with a final time of 1:10.66. Courtney Mellish (Barrie, Ontario) was first in the 1000-yard freestyle (11:35.74) and second in the 100-yard backstroke (1:03.97).
Lauren Dwyer (Orono, Maine) won the 200-backstroke at 2:11.23 while Emily Buczkowski (Woolwich, Maine) was first in the 50-yard freestyle (25.28). Jenn Trodden (Reading, Mass.) had a pair of second place finishes as she was second in both the 50-yard freestyle (25.44) and the 100-yard IM (1:03.27).
On the diving boards, Kara Capossela (Greenwich, Conn.) swept the women's events, placing first in the one meter with a score of 221.47 and winning the three-meter with a score of 240.82. Ashley Higgins (Bangor, Maine) placed second in the one-meter at 188.62.
On the men's side, Robbie Bickford (Milford, Maine) won the 200-yard IM with a time of 2:06.41 while Brian Landry (Yorktown, Va.) won the 1000-yard freestyle at 10:31.10. Ryan Fahey (Quincy, Mass.) placed second in both the 400-yard IM (4:16.49) and the 100-yard fly (53.92) while taking home third place in the 100-yard backstroke (58.86). Zachary Hamer (Andover, Mass.) also had a pair of second place finishes, placing second in the both the 100-yard freestlye with a time of 54.41 and the 1000-yard freestyle at 10:32.79. Andrew Kennedy (Marion, Ark.) was second in the 200-yard backstroke (2:17.11) and third in the 100-yard freestyle (54.49). Joey Quinn (Bangor, Maine), Connor Devers (North Attleboro, Mass.), Matthew Twist (Belgrade, Maine), Andrew Mackeil (Biddeford, Maine) and Andrew Meehan (Brewer, Maine) all had second place finishes. Quinn placed second in the 200-yard freestyle (1:51.77) while Devers was second in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:04.76). Twist picked up a second place showing in the 200-yard IM (2:08.46) while Mackeil was second in the 100-yard backstroke (56.95) and Meehan placed second in the 50-yard fly at 24.18.
Travis Wibby (South Portland, Maine) won the one meter dive at 239.47 while placing second in the three meter at 161.47.
In the relays, Dwyer, Harvey, Smrcina and Buczkowski teamed up to take the women's 200-yard medley with a time of 1:52.20 while Kara Dubiel (Carefree, Ariz.), Trodden, Dana Wright (Twin Falls, Id.) and Emily Puleio (Saco, Maine) picked up the win in the 200-yard freestyle relay at 1:45.44. On the men's side, Mackeil, Hamer, Meehan and Caleb Hoffman (Waterville, Maine) teamed up for a second place finish in the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:40.81. Fahey, Twist, Devers and Hoffman placed second in the 200-yard freestyle relay with a final time of 1:34.07.
The Black Bears return to action with a two day meeting beginning at 7 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 27 against Boston College at Wallace Pool in Orono.
