Women's Basketball Falls at Boston University, 75-34

BOSTON, Mass. -- The University of Maine women's basketball team fell on the road to Boston University by the score of 75-34 on Wednesday evening in Case Gym. Ashleigh Roberts (Wilmington, Del.) was named Maine's America East Player of the Game as the sophomore totaled 15 points, five rebounds and three assists. The loss slips the Black Bears back to 3-13 overall and 0-3 in league play while the Terriers improve to 10-6 and 3-0 in the conference.
Corinne Wellington (Rochetser, N.Y.) grabbed 10 rebounds for Maine while Alex Young netted a game-high 22 points, going 8-for-14 from the field and dumping in six three-pointers, to lead the Terrier attack.
The Terriers opened up the first minutes of the contest with the hot shooting hand, going 4-for-6 from beyond the arc, including a trio of three point hoops by Alex Young, to race out to an early 17-6 advantage with eight minutes gone in the first half. Danielle Walczak (Lee, N.H.) tallied four points in the early going for the Black Bears as twice Roberts found the freshman forward in the high post. Walczak used a nice dribble-drive to beat the defenders, laying the ball softly off glass and through the cylinder.
A 24-0 run over the next 10:04, powered by the inside work of Whitney Turner and Rashidat Agboola, extended the Terrier lead to 38-6 before Samantha Baranowski (Stanhope, N.J.) put an end to the run by drawing a foul in the low post and knocking down a free throw. The point was the 500th of Baranowski's career.
Baranowski knocked down two more free throws just before the break but the Terriers would take a 44-12 lead into the halftime break.
The Black Bears struggled from the field in the first half, shooting 4-for-21 for a 19% total while Boston University went 16-for-34, including a 54.5% mark from three-point range. Maine was paced by Roberts who tallied five points while Wellington pulled down eight rebounds.
Boston University started the second half on a 10-0 run until Brittany Williams (Rochester, N.Y.) penetrated the lane and drew a foul. Williams knocked down a pair from the charity stripe, ending the scoreless streak for the Black Bears.
Maine kept battling, staging a little 5-0 run of its own as Williams found Baranowski for a turn around jumper off a set inbounds play from the baseline. Williams then pulled down a defensive board, rushing down court and hitting Rachele Burns (Gorham, Maine) on the left wing. Burns spotted up and hit the three ball, giving the Black Bears some momentum.
After a few minutes of play, the Black Bears put together another 5-0 run with Roberts fueling all five points. Kelsey Mattice (Cicero, N.Y.) raced down court, swinging the ball into the left corner where Roberts hit the three ball. Roberts then pulled down an offensive board and went back up strong, cashing in on two more points for Maine.
Courtney Anderson (Greene, Maine) and Roberts kept the spark going for Maine as the two hit back-to-back threes before Roberts knocked down a deep jumper from just inside the arc to complete a 9-2 Black Bear run with 2:50 to play. Boston University added to its lead as time ticked away, ending with a 75-34 Terrier victory.
