Black, Calbick and Coughlin Named Freshman All-Americans

ORONO, Maine - The University of Maine baseball team had three rookies named Louisville Slugger Freshman All-Americans on Wednesday, June 8. Troy Black (Mississagua, Ontario) was named to the team at second base, Alex Calbick (Burnaby, British Columbia) at third base and Shaun Coughlin (Northford, Conn.) as a pitcher.
Black saw action in 36 games for the Black Bears, starting 28. He hit .363 with 16 runs scored and 19 RBI. He had eight doubles on the season and finished with a .449 on-base percentage. Black stole seven bases on the season for the Black Bears. He was named to the America East Second Team and the America East All-Rookie Team.
Calbick saw action in all 57 games for the Black Bears his rookie season, starting 56. He hit .280 on the season with 30 runs scored and 30 RBI. He had nine doubles and five home runs on the season to go along with one triple. Calbick went 2-for-3 with a run scored and five RBI in Maine's 8-1 win over Stony Brook in the America East Tournament. He belted a grand slam in the game. He was named to the America East Second Team and also earned a spot on the America East All-Rookie Team. Calbick was also named to the America East All-Tournament Team. He was named America East Rookie of the Week twice during the season.
Shaun Coughlin appeared in a team-high 20 games on the mound for the Black Bears this season. He finished 3-1 with a team-best 2.37 ERA. He recorded a pair of saves on the season. Coughlin struck out 34 batters in 57 innings pitched, while walking just 12. He went 25 innings during the season without allowing a walk. Coughlin was named America East Rookie of the Week on March 28 after throwing a complete game in Maine's 5-1 win over St. Peter's on March 27. He allowed just one run on five hits while striking out eight. He did not walk a batter in the game. Coughlin was named to the America East Second Team.
Maine finished the season 33-24. The Black Bears won the 2011 America East Championship and earned a berth in the 2011 NCAA Regionals. Maine defeated FIU in the North Carolina Regional to earn its first NCAA Regional victory since the 2005 season. In addition, Maine won its 1,800th game in program history in the tournament.
