Bazdanes Named NECBL Pitcher of the Week; Fransoso Also Honored

University of Maine junior pitcher A.J. Bazdanes (Nashua, N.H.) was named the New England Collegiate Baseball League Pitcher of the Week last week, while sophomore shortstop Michael Fransoso (Portsmouth, N.H.) was named among other superlatives.
Bazdanes picked up a win on June 17 against Laconia for the Sanford, Mainers. He went 7.2 shutout innings on the mound, while allowing just three singles. He struck out six in the game, while walking just one.
Fransoso was runner-up for NECBL Player of the Week as he was honored by being named among other superlatives. Fransoso hit .471 in 17 at-bats last week for the Old Orchard Beach Raging Tide.
The duo are just two of many current Black Bears who are playing in either the NECBL, Cape Cod Baseball League or other summer leagues. Maine is coming off a season in which it won the 2011 America East Championship and earned a victory over FIU in the NCAA Chapel Hill Regional. Maine is expected to return the majority of its players for the 2012 season.
