Men's Basketball Falls to UMBC

ORONO, Maine -- Troy Barnies (Auburn, Maine) notched his sixth double-double of the season with 14 points and 11 rebounds, but the University of Maine men's basketball team fell to UMBC 84-79 on Sunday afternoon at the Alfond Arena. Maine falls to 14-9 overall and 8-3 in America East play while UMBC is now 5-19 and 4-7 in league play.
The Black Bears got off to a good start, opening the game on a 15-to-6 run in the first five minutes courtesy of eight points from Barnies.
Alasdair Fraser (Falkirk, Scotland) would push the lead to 24-11 midway through the first stanza on a jumper and Gerald McLemore (San Diego, Calif.) would make it 31-14 on a three-pointer with just under eight minutes to play.
The Retrievers would chip away at the lead and eventually get it down to a 44-33 Black Bear lead at halftime.
Maine was led in the first half by Barnies who had 14 points and seven rebounds while Sean McNally (Gardiner, Maine) added four points, five rebounds and three assists.
The Black Bears shot 53.1 percent from the field while UMBC shot 46.7 percent. Maine held a 23-12 edge in rebounding.
In the second half, the Retrievers caught fire and would tie the game at 51 a little over six minutes into the half. The lead would go back and forth until UMBC took a two-point lead with eight minutes left and expand it to eight with under four minutes to play.
Maine got the lead down to five with two minutes left, but UMBC would make free throws to keep the lead just out of reach.
McLemore finished with 24 points while McNally added 11 points, six rebounds and four assists. Fraser had nine points and eight rebounds while Raheem Singleton (Boston, Mass.) had eight points, five rebounds and four assists.
Maine won the rebounding battle 38-26 and shot 47.5 percent while UMBC shot 53.7 percent.
Barnies was named America East Player of the Game while Chris De La Rosa earned UMBC's honor with 24 points and 13 assists.
Former standout Bob Warner has his number 52 retired before the game.
