Baseball Falls at Stetson 3-1

DELAND, Fla.-- The University of Maine baseball team dropped a 3-1 decision to Stetson on Sunday afternoon in its Florida opener. The Black Bears had the tying runs on base in the top of the ninth inning, but was unable to knot the score.
Maine falls to 0-5 on the season, while Stetson improves to 5-0.
Maine opened the scoring in the bottom of the first inning. Taylor Lewis (Montville, Conn.) led off the game with a single through the left side. He scored when Tyler Patzalek (Burlington, Ontario) double over the head of the center fielder.
Stetson countered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning. Jeff Simpson walked and Spencer Theisen followed with a single to right field, sending Simpson to third base. Theisen then stole second base. Theisen advanced to third and Simpson scored on a balk. Ben Carhart followed with a single scoring Theisen, giving the Hatters a 2-1 lead.
Stetson extended its lead to 3-1 in the bottom of the sixth when Carhart homered.
Lewis went 2-for-4 in the game with a run scored, while Patzalek was 2-for-4 with an RBI. Alex Calbick (Burnaby, British Columbia) also had a pair of hits in four at bats.
Jeffrey Gibbs (Toronto, Ontario) got the start on the mound for the Black Bears. He went five innings and allowed a pair of runs on three hits. He struck out five batters. Gibbs picks up the loss and falls to 0-2 on the season. Stephen Perakslis (Abington, Mass.) went the final three innings. He allowed one run on a pair of hits.
Lindsey Caughel went 7.2 innings for the Hatters. He allowed one run on four hits while striking out eight. He picks up the win and improves to 10 on the season. Cameron Griffin went a third of an inning. He allowed one hit. Robbie Powell pitched the ninth and allowed a pair of hits.
The two teams will continue their series on Monday, Feb. 28 with first pitch scheduled for 6:30 PM.
