Black Bears' Upset Bid Falls Short in WHEA Quarterfinals

Providence, R.I. – The University of Maine women's ice hockey team gets shown the door in Hockey East Quarterfinal action as they go down 5-2 to Providence, Saturday afternoon at Schneider Arena in Providence, R.I.
Third seeded #10 Providence will go on to face second seeded #7 Boston College in one semifinal while top seeded #4 Boston University will meet fifth seeded Northeastern, who shutout Connecticut 4-0 in the other quarterfinal of the day.
Upset minded Maine came out of the gates firing as Dawn Sullivan (Enfield, Nova Scotia) nailed home a wrist shot just to the right of the crease at 17:25. The goal came on Maine's second power play of the game and resulted in momentum that Maine would carry through to the next intermission. Melissa Gagnon (St. Gilles, Quebec) and Myriam Croussette (Baie-Comeau, Quebec) were credited with assists on the play.
The next goal, at 4:59 of the second period seemed to knock the wind out of Maine's sails for the remainder of the game. Providence's Laura Veharanta escaped long on a power play transition and found the back of the net to knot up the score, 1-1.
Providence was seemingly a step ahead of The Black Bears all afternoon, as they ended the day with a 38-31 shot advantage. Although Maine goaltender, Brittany Ott (St. Clair Shores, Mich.) allowed five goals on the game, she still managed 33 saves on the night. This is her fourth 30 plus save game in five chances, all against top ten opponents.
Maine finishes the year with a 12-17-5 mark while Providence continues on, holding a 22-11-1 record.
