KINGSTON, R.I. -- The University of Maine swimming and diving teams competed in the Harold Anderson Invitational this weekend, hosted by the University of Rhode Island. After two days of competition, the women's squad placed third out of the six teams they swam against with 679 total points while the men's team placed second out of five teams, tallying 672 total points. Other teams competing were the University of Rhode Island, Providence College, Assumption College, Bryant University, and Holy Cross.
Day one consisted of 12 events, eight of which the Black Bears had top three performances. The first of which came when
Andrew Mackeil (Biddeford, Maine),
Brian Landry (Yorktown, Va.),
Andrew Meehan (Brewer, Maine), and
Joey Quinn (Bangor, Maine) competed in the 400-yard medley relay. They finished third with a time of 3:37.81.
Shannon Bender (Cumberland, R.I.) picked up a third place finish in the next event, the 500-yard freestyle. She finished with an overall time of 5:14.51. Maine then took first and second in the men's 500-yard freestyle.
Yuri Chornobil (Rochester, N.Y.) took first with a time of 4:53.75 while
Michael Capossela (Riverside, Conn.) took second with a time of 4:54.61.
Naja Harvey (Orono, Minn.) took second place in the women's 50-yard freestyle event, after finishing with a time of 24.59. Naja then helped the 200-yard freestyle relay team take second place with a time of 1:38.44. She swam along side Lauren Dwyer (Orono, Maine), Jenn Trodden (Reading, Mass.), and
Emily Buczkowski (Woolwich, Maine).
The men then swam to a third place finish in the same event, finishing with a time of 1:29.00.

Caleb Hoffman (Waterville, Maine), and
Joey Quinn (Bangor, Maine) swam the event for the Black Bears for third.
Kara Capossela (Greenwich, Conn.) then took second for the Maine in the one-meter diving competition. She finished with a score of 230.60.
Day two started off with a win by the women by their 200-yard medley relay team. The team consisted of
Emily Buczkowski, Naja Harvey, Erica Smrcina (North Falmouth, Mass.), and Lauren Dwyer. Together, they swam to a time of 1:49.43. In the next event, the men also swan the 200-yard medley relay and finished third with a time of 1:39.49. The team consisted of
Andrew Mackeil,
Brian Landry,
Andrew Meehan, and
Daniel Duvall.
Shannon Bender picked up another third place finish in the 400-yard individual medley. She
finished with an overall time of 4:41.89, giving the Black Bears their 10th top three performance of the competition. Lauren Dwyer added to this total after placing third in the 200-yard freestyle race, finishing with a time of 1:56.47.
Naja Harvey then picked up her third top-three finish in the 100-yard breaststroke event. She swam to a time of 1:06.56, finishing just behind the leader.
Kara Capossela then took first place by a wide margin in the three-meter diving competition, attaining a final score of 260.80.
Spencer Warmuth (Brewer, Maine) dove to a second place finish in the next event, the one-meter diving competition.
Kara Dubiel (Carefree, Ariz.) finished the next event in third place for the Black Bears. She swam the 1000-yard freestyle in a time of 10:55.28. The men's squad then took first and second in their 1000-yard freestyle event.
Yuri Chornobil placed first with a time of 10:05.13 while
Michael Capossela finished second with a time of 10:23.84. It was the pair's second one-two finish of the competition.
Maine then got their 18th and final top three performance in the women's 400-yard freestyle relay when Lauren Dwyer, Jen Trodden, Helaina Sacco (Rochester, Mass.), and Emily Buczkowski took third place in the event with an overall time of 3:37.31.
The Black Bears will host Bates on Saturday, December 10, for a one-day competition. The start time for the meet is 1 p.m.
