Women's Swimming Falls at Vermont, 172-125

BURLINGTON, Vt. -- The women's swimming & diving team fell on Saturday afternoon to fellow America East foe Vermont by a score of 172-125. Freshman Naja Harvey (Orono, Minn.) paced the Black Bears with a pair of wins while Carmen Linden (Ottawa, Ontario) and Lauren Dwyer (Orono, Maine) each recorded a pair of second place showings.
The Black Bears swept the relay events as the 200 freestyle relay team set a new pool record at Forbush Natatorium. The team of Harvey, Jenn Trodden (Reading, Mass.), Dwyer and Emily Buczkowski set the new record with a final time of 1:39.00. Maine's 400 medley relay team, made up of Buczkowski, Harvey, Erica Smrcina (North Falmouth, Mass.) and Trodden also won their event with a time of 4:02.20.
Harvey led the charge in the individual events as she swept the breaststroke races. The freshman placed first in the 100 yard breaststroke with a time of 1:07.28 and also won the 200 yard breaststroke at 2:27.98.
Linden had a pair of strong showings in the distance event for Maine as she placed second in both the 1000 yard freestyle (10:47.84) and the 500 yard freestyle (5:16.62). Dwyer controlled the sprint events for Maine, placing second in the 200 yard freestyle at 1:57.12 and was second in the 50 free with a time of 25.41. The sophomore also tallied a third place showing in the 100 yard fly at 1:01.13
Shannon Bender (Cumberland, R.I.) had a pair of top three finishes as she was second in the 400 IM (4:46.82) and third in the 1000 yard freestyle (10:53.25) while Smrcina also had two top three showings, placing second in the 100 yard fly (58.64) and third in the 100 yard breaststroke (1:08.09).
Helaina Sacco (Rochester, Mass.) was third in both the 100 yard freestyle (54.60) and the 200 yard freestyle (1:59.06). Courtney Mellish (Barrie, Ontario) and Lauren Thornbrough (San Diego, Calif.) each added a third place finish. Mellish placed third in the 400 yard IM at 4:55.90 while Thornbrough was third in the 200 yard fly, touching the wall at 2:12.40.
Kara Capossela (Greenwich, Conn.) continued to shine on the diving boards as she swept both events on Saturday. Capossela won the one meter with a score of 224.10 and was tops in the three meter at 257.85.
The Black Bears return to action when they take part in the URI Invitational, a two-day event beginning on Dec. 2 at 5 p.m.
