Barnies' Monster Game Leads Men's Basketball to 82-67 Win Over UMBC

BALTIMORE, Md.--Troy Barnies (Auburn, Maine) notched a double-double with 25 points and 13 rebounds as the University of Maine men's basketball team defeated the University of Maryland-Baltimore County by the score of 82-67 on Saturday afternoon at the Retriever Activities Center. Maine is now 8-7 overall and 2-1 in America East play while UMBC falls to 1-14 and 0-2 in league play.
After falling behind 5-0, Terrance Mitchell (Milton, Fla.) scored the next five points and Gerald McLemore followed with a three to give Maine and 8-5 lead. Troy Barnies then scored a nifty layup to make it a five-point Black Bear advantage.
The Retrievers came back to take an 11-10 lead, and the teams exchanged baskets until it was 18-17 Maine with just under nine minutes left.
The Black Bears then went on a 10-to-five run to grab a six-point edge courtesy of five points from Barnies.
UMBC cut into the lead to make it 36-33 with seconds remaining, but Raheem Singleton (Boston, Mass.) made a shifty move to the basket between two defenders to give Maine a 38-33 halftime lead.
The Black bears were led by Barnies' 15 points an five rebounds while McLemore added 10 points and four rebounds.
Mitchell opened the second half with a three-pointer, but UMBC scored the next four points to cut the lead to 41-37. The Black Bears answered with an 11-to-four run to take 52-41 lead six minutes into the second stanza with Singleton leading the charge with five points in the stretch.
Maine followed that with a 15-to-seven run that gave the Black Bears a 66-49 lead with eight minutes left. After UMBC made a three and got a stop, the Retrievers came running down the court looking to cut into the lead, but Mike Allison (Lynden, Ontario) sprinted the length of the court to block the layup.
Barnies made a layup the other way and the Black Bears would make free throws down the stretch to not let the Retrievers back into the game.
McLemore finished with 15 points and four rebounds. Singleton scored 15 points to go with four assists while Mitchell added 14 points.
Barnies was named Maine's America East Player of the Game while Chris De La Rosa scored 24 points to garner UMBC's honor.
The Black Bears shot 53.7 percent for the game while holding the Retrievers to 42.4 percent shooting. Maine grabbed 39 rebounds to UMBC's 25.
