Men's Basketball Wins Fifth-Straight With 70-59 Win Over Stony Brook

ORONO, Maine--The University of Maine men's basketball team defeated Stony Brook by the score of 70-59 on Saturday evening at the Alfond Arena. Maine improves to 12-7 overall and 6-1 in America East play while Stony Brook falls to 7-12 and 2-5 in league play. Maine was led by America East Player of the Game Terrance Mitchell (Milton, Fla.) who had 13 points and a game-high seven rebounds.
Maine got off to a fast start, taking a 25-6 lead midway through the first half as Mitchell and Raheem Singleton (Boston, Mass.) each contributed six points in the run that featured seven different Black Bears scoring, including a tough layup and foul by Singleton.
However, Stony Brook, the defending America East Regular Season Champion, chipped away at the lead and eventually got it down to seven with just under two minutes to play in the half. A Troy Barnies (Auburn, Maine) free throw would give Maine a 34-26 lead at halftime.
The Black Bears were led in the first half by McLemore who had eight points and three rebounds while Singleton added seven points. Maine shot 38.5 percent from the field, including 50 percent from long range while holding the Seawolves to 37.9 percent shooting.
Stony Brook chipped away at the lead a little more to start the second half, and made it 42-37 five minutes in. Maine responded by going on a 15-to-6 run over the next seven minutes to push the lead to 57-43, before a McLemore three-pointer made it a 65-47 game with four minutes left.
The Black Bears would sink free throws the rest of the way to seal the win.
Barnies finished with a team-high 17 points, including a nice one-handed dunk to go with four rebounds while McLemore had 15. Singleton scored 12 to go with a game-high seven assists and three steals.
The Black Bears shot 45.8 percent from the field while holding the Seawolves to 36.8 percent shooting.
Stony Brook was led by its America East Player of the Game Leonard Hayes who had 22 points and seven rebounds.
The Black Bears return to action on Tuesday when they host New Hampshire at 7 p.m.
