Trio of Black Bears Win WHEA Weekly Awards

WAKEFIELD, Mass. -- Three University of Maine women's ice hockey
players have been honored with Women's Hockey East weekly awards.
Sophomore forward Brittany
Dougherty (Chesterfield, Mich.) has been named the Pure Hockey
Player of the Week, freshman forward Jenny
Kistner (Peoria, Ill.) is the Pro Ambitions Rookie of the Week
while sophomore goaltender Brittany
Ott (St. Clair Shores, Mich.) has been named the WHEA Defensive
Player of the Week, as announced by the Women's Hockey East
Association on Monday.
Dougherty had a great week for the Black Bears as she picked up
seven points in the two Maine wins over Sacred Heart. Dougherty
recorded a goal and two assists in Friday night's win before adding
another goal and three more assists in Saturday's victory. For
Dougherty, it was her second time being honored by the conference
as she was named WHEA Rookie of the Week last season.
Kistner had a solid debut weekend for the Black Bears. She picked
up her first career point on Friday night when she assisted on
Maine's sixth goal which was scored by fellow freshman Kayla
Kaluzny (Calgary, Alberta). Kistner picked up her first career
goal in Saturday's win while also adding an assist for her first
multiple point game in a Black Bear uniform.
Ott, who was named to the WHEA All-Rookie Team at the conclusion
of last season, picked up the win in net Friday night for Maine.
The win was Ott's first of the year as she starts off the 2010-11
season at 1-0-0. Ott shutdown Sacred Heart on all 19 shots they
took to pick up her third career shutout.
The Black Bears were also named the WHEA Team of the Week as they scored 18 goals in two shutout victories over Sacred Heart.
The Black Bears return to action Saturday, Oct. 9 when they host
Mercyhurst at Alfond Arena. Puck drop is scheduled for 1 p.m.
