Black Bears Fall to Boston University in Season Finale

The University of Maine women's ice hockey team fell in their last game of the 2009-2010 season to the Boston University Terriers by a score of 2-0 on Sunday afternoon. With the loss, the Black Bears finish the season 6-20-5 and 3-15-3-1 in Women's Hockey East action. The win moves the Terriers to 14-8-12 overall and 10-6-5-3 in WHE play.
The Black Bears were led by senior Abby Barton (Woodstock, N.H.) who recorded four shots in her final game as a Black Bear. Candice Currier (Goffstown, N.H.) was also solid in net for the Black Bears as she made 29 stops between the pipes for Maine.
After a scoreless third period in which the Black Bears were out shot 13-9, the Terriers would open the scoring half way through the second period. Skating 4-on-4, Lauren Cherewyk received a pass from Melissa Anderson and beat Currier to take a 1-0 advantage.
Boston University would extend their lead to 2-0, 6:42 into the third period when Jonnie Bloemers notched a power play goal. The play started with Jillian Kirchner sending a pass cross ice to Melissa Tetreau. Tetreau then found Bloemers who snuck a shot by Currier for the Terriers second goal of the contest.
The Black Bears would pull Currier with 1:13 left and skate with a 6-on-5 advantage but were unable to find the back of the net, dropping their season finale to the Terriers, 2-0.
Boston University out shot Maine by a slim 31-24 margin. The Black Bears were unable to score on the power play as they went 0-5 in the game while Boston University was 1-7 with the man advantage.
Currier took the loss for Maine after making 29 saves as her record drops to 2-8-2. Melissa Haber picks up the win for the Terriers as she made 24 saves and picked up her third shutout of the season. Haber is now 8-5-4 on the season.
The Black Bears made many strides this season and will look to build on the past season when they return a solid group of veterans for the 2010-2011 campaign.
