Nyquist and Bender Named to ESPN The Magazine/ CoSIDA Academic All-District Teams

ORONO, Maine - University of Maine men's ice hockey standout Gustav Nyquist (Malmo, Sweden) and men's swimming and diving star Jeremy Bender (St. Paul, Minn.) were each named to the ESPN The Magazine / CoSIDA Academic All-District Second Team on Thursday, May 20.
Nyquist was named to the Hobey Hat Trick, as one of the top three players in the nation this past season. He led the country in scoring with 19 goals and 42 assists for 61 points. He saw action in all 39 games for the Black Bears and chipped in with seven power play goals and four game-winners. He was a big reason behind Maine advancing to the Hockey East Title Game. The Black Bears fell in overtime to eventual national champion Boston College in that game.
Nyquist was named a First Team All-American and runner up for the Hockey East Player of the Year. He was the lone unanimous selection to the Hockey East First Team. In addition, Nyquist was also named to the 2010 All-College Hockey News First Team, CollegeHockey247.com's All-America First Team and the Inside College Hockey All-America First Team.
Nyquist was one of just three sophomores named to the First or Second Team All-District Team. A finance major, he has been named a Maine Scholar-Athlete Award winner, named to the Hockey East Academic Honor Roll and earned a spot on the Dean's List.
Bender, a junior marine science major, has been named Maine's Most Valuable Swimmer the past two seasons. At the America East Championships, Bender broke the school record in the 400 I.M. Bender's time of 4:07.56 broke the told record of 4:08.66 set in 1978 by Don Winant.
Bender was recently named a Senior Skull. The Senior Skulls consist of senior men at the University of Maine who have shown outstanding leadership, campus involvement, community service academic achievement, responsibility, character and integrity. Bender is a Maine Scholar-Athlete Award winner and has been named to the America East Commissioner's Academic Honor Roll. Bender spent this past fall studying abroad in Australia, where he got some great hands on experience studying and exploring the Great Barrier Reef.
Being named to the ESPN The Magazine / CoSIDA All-Academic Team is one of the highest academic honor for collegiate student-athletes.
