Black Bears Kick-Off America East Championships

BOSTON, Mass. - The University of Maine swimming and diving teams kicked off the 2010 America East Championships with the relay events on Thursday night at Boston University. Both teams were competitive in the pool to start off the first five events.
Kara Dubiel (Carefree, Ari.), Carmen Linden (Ottawa, Ontario), Grace Barnett (Bangor, Maine) and Katelyn Hunt (Wayzata, Minn.) kicked things off for the Black Bears as they competed in the 800 yard freestyle, touching the wall at 7:43.64, just over a second ahead of the Binghamton team, for sixth place. The last women's event of the night was the 200 yard medley relay which was swam by Sara Knight (Gardiner, Maine), Caitlin Shelley (Charlottesville, Va.), Meaghann Fisher (Carmel, Ind.) and Jennifer Trodden (Reading, Mass.) who placed seventh at 1:49.20.
The Black Bears 800 yard freestyle team kicked things off on the men's side. Andrew Meehan (Brewer, Maine), Kevin Staples (Mt. Desert Island, Maine), Yuri Chornobil (Rochester, N.Y.) and Michael Capossela (Riverside, Conn.) touched the wall in 7:06.29, good for fifth place. The final event of the evening for Maine was the 200 yard medley relay and was swam by senior Jamison Young (Richboro, Pa.), Brian Landry (Yorktown, Va.), Andrew Mackeil (Biddeford, Maine) and Roy Warren Jr. (North Palm Beach, Fla.).
After the first day of events, the women's team currently sits in seventh place with 50 points while the men are in fifth with 28 total points.
