Black Bears Compete on Final Day of the America East Championships

BOSTON, Mass. - The University of Maine swimming and diving teams completed the 2010 America East Championships on Sunday evening at the Boston University Aquatic Center. The men's team finished in fifth place with 258 points while the women placed seventh with 209 points. The women's team were led by Jennifer Trodden (Reading, Mass.) and Meaghann Fisher (Carmel, Ind.) who each set new school-records in their respective events.
Trodden continued her record-breaking pace in the 200 breaststroke event as she bettered her preliminary time to re-set the school-record she set earlier in the day. Trodden's new school-record time of 2:21.86 placed her sixth overall in the 200 breaststroke finals. Caitlin Shelley (Charlottesville, Va.) and Megan McLean (Walpole, Mass.) finished neck and neck in the 200 breaststroke consolation final, finishing 13th and 14th with times of 2:25.63 and 2:25.78, respectively.
Fisher took to the pool in the 200 yard fly finals next for the Black Bears, placing 13th in the consolation final of the event by bettering her school-record she had set earlier in the day with a time of 2:07.09. On the diving boards, senior Samantha Graham (Vestal, N.Y.) led the way with a solid performance that placed her seventh overall with 408.90 points, less than a point out of sixth place. Juliet Cobb (Bangor, Maine) also competed on the boards for Maine, placing 17th in the preliminaries with a score of 115.50. The Black Bears women's team finished up the 2010 Championships with a sixth place finish in the 400 yard free relay event, touching the wall at 3:35.88. Swimming the event for Maine was Carmen Linden (Ottawa, Ontario), Fisher, Trodden and Kara Dubiel (Carefree, Ariz.).
Yuri Chornobil (Rochester, N.Y.) kicked things off for the men's team with a strong fifth place finish in the finals of the 1650 yard freestyle event. Chornobil's time of 16:11.08 was just two seconds shy of breaking the school-record in the event. Junior Jeremy Bender (St. Paul, Minn.) finished the 1650 freestyle in ninth place with a time of 16:22.54. Michael Capossela (Riverside, Conn.) also took part in the 1650 event for Maine, placing 11th with a time of 16:31.23. Daniel MacDonald (Melrose, Mass.) rounded out the race for the Black Bears, touching the wall at 17:31.86 for 16th place.
The next event for the Maine men was the 200 yard backstroke race which had three Black Bear swimmers competing in the consolation final. Jamison Young (Richboro, Pa.) was the top finisher in the race for Maine, placing 14th at 1:58.23. Young was followed up by fellow senior Kevin Staples (Mt. Desert Island, Maine) in 15th place at 1:59.73 and William York (South Portland, Maine), who placed 16th with a time of 2:11.41. Roy Warren Jr. (North Palm Beach, Fla.) and Andrew Meehan (Brewer, Maine) placed 12th and 13th with times of 48.07 and 48.24, respectively, in the 100 yard free finals.
Brian Landry (Yorktown, Va.) and Zachary Hamer (Andover, Mass.) took part in the 200 breaststroke race for the Black Bears next. Landry placed seventh overall with a time of 2:11.58 while Hamer followed him up closely, placing eighth in 2:12.18. Eric DeLuca (St. Paul, Minn.) was 15th in the same event for Maine at 2:19.23 while Gregory Yum (Buxton, Maine) followed him up in 16th place at 2:26.94. Bender then took eighth place overall for the Black Bears in the 200 yard fly finals with a time of 1:56.50. Andrew Mackeil (Biddeford, Maine) and Zachary Cravens (Ellsworth, Maine) raced in the 200 yard fly consolation finals, placing 14th and 16th with times of 1:58.71 and 2:01.24, respectively. The Black Bear men finished things up with a fifth place finish in the 400 free relay with a time of 3:13.21. Swimming for Maine was Meehan, Staples, Warren and Ryan Wonsor (Killington, Vt.).
The Black Bear women's team placed seventh overall in the 2010 America East Championships with a final score of 209, 50 more points than they scored at last year's Championships. The men's team finished in fifth place, compiling 258 total points over the four days of events, improving on last year's total by 39 points.

PRELIMINARIES
The University of Maine Swimming and Diving teams kicked off the morning preliminaries on the final day of competition at the America East Championships with more records dropping. The Black Bears qualified a total of 13 swimmers for the finals startedaround 5:30 p.m. from the Boston University Aquatic Center. Fisher set a new school mark in the 200 yard butterfly with a time of 2:07.24 while freshman Trodden broke her own school-record in the 200 breaststroke.
Fisher kept her streak going as she has now broken a school-record in three straight days at the America East Championships. Fisher broke current head coach Susan Lizzotte's school-record in the 200 yard butterfly event, finishing 11th overall with a new record time of 2:07.24.
Trodden had another record-breaking run, her third in three days, breaking her own school-record in the 200 yard breaststroke event that she set earlier this year at the Boston University Invitational. Trodden set the new mark with a time of 2:22.24, putting her seventh overall and setting her up for the finals to be run later on this evening. Shelley and McLean also had strong showing in the 200 yard breaststroke, placing 12th and 13th with times of 2:26.92 and 2:29.96, respectively.
The Black Bear men kicked off the final day of the America East Championships with three qualifying to run in the consolation finals in the 200 yard backstroke event. Young, Staples, and York placed 14th, 15th and 16th with times of 1:58.24, 2:02.09, 2:10.69, respectively. Meehan and Warren Jr both qualified for the consolation final in the 100 yard freestyle event. Meehan placed 12th with a time of 48.02 while Warren touched the wall at 48.37, good for 14th place overall. Wonsor placed 18th with a time of 48.75, setting himself up as an alternate in the 100 yard free event.
Both Landry and Hamerhad solid runs in the 200 breaststroke event. Both swimmers set them up for the finals as Landry came in with the fifth best time at 2:09.74 while Hamer was seventh overall at 2:11.15. DeLuca and Yum both will race in the consolation finals of the 200 breaststroke as they finished 15th and 16th, touching the wall at 2:20.62 and 2:25.88, respectively. Bender set himself up for the 'A' finals in the 200 yard fly event with a time of 1:55.31, qualifying in the eighth position. Mackeil will race in the consolation final of the 200 yard fly as he placed teneth with a time of 1:56.41 as will Cravens who placed 15th at 1:59.21.
