Black Bears Compete on Day Two of the America East Championships

BOSTON, Mass. - The University of Maine swimming and diving teams competed in day two of the America East Championships at Boston University on Friday. The top 16 times in each preliminary event qualified for the finals that started at 6 p.m. The finals were broken down into two brackets: the top eight times swam in the "A" finals and the second eight raced in the "B" finals. The Black Bears had solid performances including freshman Jennifer Trodden's (Reading, Mass.) record breaking swim in the 200 IM finals.
Trodden recorded the highest finish of the day for the Black Bears as she won the 'B' consolation race, finishing ninth overall, and setting a new school mark in the 200 IM with a time of 2:06.69. Caitlin Shelley (Charlottesville, Va.) and Meaghann Fisher(Carmel, Ind.) also had strong performances in the 200 IM, placing 14th and 15th with times of 2:08.67 and 2:09.00 respectively. Senior Samantha Graham (Vestal, N.Y.) placed 12th in the 3 meter dive with a final score of 193.50 as sophomore Juliet Cobb was 16th with a score of 135.50.
The team of Carmen Linden (Ottawa, Ontario), Fisher, Trodden, and Kara Dubiel (Carefree, Ariz.) finished out the night of events on the women's side by placing seventh in the 200 yard freestyle relay with a time of 1:39.30.
The men were led by Yuri Chornobil (Rochester, N.Y.) who took home 11th place in the 500 yard freestyle with a time of 4:41.69. Michael Capossela (Riverside, Conn.) also competed in the 500 yard free, finishing 15th with a final time of 4:44.10. The Black Bears also picked up points in the only sprint race of the night. Kyle Staples (Mt. Desert Island, Maine) placed 13th with a final time of 21.97. Ryan Wonsor (Killington, Vt.) placed 15th with a time of 22.02 and Jamison Young (Richboro, Pa.) touched the wall in 16th place with a time of 22.30.
The Black Bears 200 yard freestyle relay team placed fifth in the finals with a time of 1:27.10. Racing in the event for the Black Bears was Andrew Meehan (Brewer, Maine), Staples, Young and Wonsor.
After Day Two, the Black Bear men sit in fifth place with 71 points while the women remain in seventh with 94 total points.
The Black Bears return to the pool tomorrow at 10 a.m. for day three of the America East Championships.
PRELIMINARIES
The preliminary races started at 10 a.m. on Friday morning and saw several Black Bears have strong showings, qualifying them for the finals to take part later on in the evening.
Fisher was the top finisher for Maine in its early preliminary races as she touched the wall in tenth place in the 200 yard IM event with a qualifying time of 2:08.40, re-setting the school record just moments after Trodden broke the record in the previous heat. Trodden was also strong in the 200 yard IM, finishing just over two-tenths of a second behind Fisher with a time of 2:08.68, good for 12th place. Shelley also set herself up to race in the finals, finishing in 16th place in the 200 IM at 2:09.43.
On the men's side of the prelims, both Chornobil and Capossela qualified in the 500 yard freestyle event. Chornobil nabbed 15th place at 4:43.85 and was followed very closely by Capossela who took home 16th place at 4:43.86. In the 50 freestyle sprint race, the Black Bears qualified three as Staple, Wonsor and Young finished head to tail in the 14th, 15th and 16th spots with times of 22.00, 22.22 and 22.32, respectively. Meehan just missed the top sixteen as he finished in the 17th spot at 22.37 and was named an alternate for the finals.
