Black Bears Sweep Male Swimming and Diving Awards

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- A pair of University of Maine freshmen on the Black Bear swimming and diving team took home top honors in America East this week, as announced by the conference on Tuesday. Freshman swimmer James Forest (Columbia, Md.) and freshman diver Tim Smith (Bangor, Maine) have been named this week's Male Swimmer and Diver of the Week, respectively, for their performances in a home meet against conference foe Stony Brook.
Forest took home a pair of wins as well as a third place in Saturday's home opening meet at Wallace Pool. Forest won the 100-yard backstroke in 55.87 and touched the wall first in the 200-yard IM at 2:01.02. Forest also scored points for the Black Bears with a third place finish in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 2:03.81. He also helped the Maine 200 medley relay team to a second place finish in 1:40.75.
Smith swept the diving events for the Black Bears on Saturday. Smith placed first in the one meter dive after scoring 257.78 points and was also first in the three meter dive with a point total of 230.25.
The Black Bears return to the pool this Saturday when they travel to take on Keene State and Vermont in a dual meet at Keene, N.H. The meet is scheduled to start at 1 p.m.
