Women's Hockey Falls at Providence, 3-1

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The University of Maine women's ice hockey team dropped its second Women's Hockey East Association (WHEA) game of the season with a 3-1 loss to Providence Colege on Sunday afternoon. The loss puts the Black Bears at 4-6-0 on the season and 0-2-0 in WHEA play. Providence picked up the win and moves to 8-3-1 overall and 1-1-1 in WHEA action. Sophomore forward Brittany Dougherty (Chesterfield, Mich.) notched the lone goal for the Black Bears.
With just 19 seconds left in the first period, Amber Yung put the Friars up 1-0. Yung capitalized off a rebound and slapped a shot that slipped past Maine goaltender Brittany Ott (St. Clair Shores, Mich.). Rebecca Morse and Alyse Ruff assisted on the goal for the Friars.
The Friars would extend their lead to 2-0 midway through the second period when Ruff notched her fourth goal of the season. Corinne Buie controlled the puck behind the Maine net and slid a pass out in front to a charging Ruff who one-timed the puck into the back of the Maine net.
The Black Bears would cut the lead in half when Dougherty lit the lamp for her seventh goal of the season. With Maine skating on the power play, Ashley Norum (Fairbanks, Alaska) blasted a shot towards the Friar net. Dougherty was able to get a stick on the puck, redirecting the puck past Providence goaltender Genevieve Lacasse and pulling Maine within one goal. Danielle Ward (Lansing, Mich.) also assisted on the goal for Maine.
The Friars would quickly answer as Buie knocked in Providence's third goal of the game just 11 seconds after the Maine goal. Buie skated into the Maine zone and was able to beat Ott for her fifth goal of the season.
The Black Bears would pull Ott with 1:01 remaining in the contest but couldn't capitalize with the extra skater, dropping the game to Providence 3-1.
Ott made 30 saves in net for the Black Bears but slips to 3-5-0 on the season. Lacasse made 16 saves in the win for Providence while improving her record to 8-3-1 on the season.
Providence held the advantage in shots 33-17 and were 0-6 on the power play. The Black Bears finished the game 1-4 on the power play. Maine has now scored a power play goal in its last three games.
The Black Bears return to action with a home WHEA series against Northeastern beginning on Thursday, Nov. 11 at 7 p.m.
