Pair of Black Bears Win WHEA Weekly Awards

WAKEFIELD, Mass. - Two University of Maine women's ice hockey players have been honored with Women's Hockey East Association (WHEA) weekly awards, as announced by the league on Monday. Sophomore Brittany Dougherty (Chesterfield, Mich.) has been named this week's Pure Hockey Player of the Week while sophomore goaltender Brittany Ott (St. Clair Shores, Mich.) has been named the week's WHEA Defensive Player of the Week. It is the third WHEA Defensive Player of the Week award for Ott this season and Dougherty's second Pure Hockey Player of the Week award.
Dougherty tallied a pair of goals over the week to go along with three assists. Dougherty's first goal of the week turned out to be the game-winner in a 4-1 victory over New Hampshire in a neutral site game played at the Androscoggin Bank Colisee in Lewiston, Maine. The win was the first WHEA victory of the season for Maine and the first win over UNH since January 20, 2002. Dougherty also had a great weekend series at Robert Morris. The Black Bears won game one 4-2 behind a goal and two assists by Dougherty. Dougherty added her third assist of the week in a 1-1 tie against Robert Morris the next day. The sophomore forward ended the week with a +4 rating for Maine.
Ott was stellar for the Black Bears in net all week long. She tallied her first WHEA win of the season after making 32 saves against New Hampshire. Ott followed up that performance with a pair of 42 save efforts against Robert Morris, a win and a tie for the Black Bears. Ott is currently riding a five game unbeaten streak after finishing the week at 2-0-1 with a .967 save percentage to go along with a 1.30 goals against average.
The Black Bears skate back into WHEA action when they travel to take on Vermont on Friday, Dec. 3 at 7 p.m.
