Women's Basketball Hits the Road for the First Time in 2010-11

ORONO, Maine – The Maine women's basketball team (0-1) hits the road for the first time in 2010-11 and will face Bryant (0-2) Friday at 7 p.m. The lone road contest in the month of November will be the first ever meeting between the Black Bears and the Bulldogs, but UMaine holds an 18-5 record against teams from the North East Conference (NEC).
Maine is coming off a season-opening 73-54 loss to Harvard. The Black Bears led 29-28 at halftime but were unable to hold on against the Crimson. Umaine pulled down 44 rebounds and drained 40% of their three pointers, which ranks second and third in the America East respectively. Four Black Bears scored in double figures, led by Katelyn Vanderhoff's (Lititz, Pa./Lancaster Mennonite) 12 points.
Corinne Wellington (Rochester, N.Y./Wilson Magnet) was one of four America East players to record a double-double last week. She drained 10 points and pulled down 10 boards against Harvard, while Amber Smith (Ipswich, Mass./Ipswich) opened her redshirt-freshman campaign with 11 points and five rebounds.
Tanna Ross (Newburgh, Maine/Hampden Academy), one of the Black Bears' four captains, ranks ninth among active America East student-athletes with 488 career points.
Bryant opened the season with a pair of road games. The Bulldogs fell 70-59 in their season opener at Penn and wrapped up the road trip with an 84-80 overtime loss at Lafayette.
Bryant has outscored both of their opponents in the second half. Five different players have recorded double-figure scoring performances. Meredith Soper leads the Bulldogs with 14.5 points a game.
