Four Upperclassmen Named 2010-11 Captains

ORONO, Maine - Four of Maine women's basketball's upperclassmen will serve as captains for the 2010-11 season.
The Black Bears' four captains are senior Tanna Ross (Newburgh, Maine/Hampden Academy), junior Samantha Baranowski (Stanhope, N.J./Lenape Valley Regional), junior Samantha Wheeler (Derry, N.H./Timberlane Regional) and junior Brittany Williams (Rochester, N.Y./Churchville-Chili).
Ross is Maine's lone senior this season. She missed a portion of last season with an injury but finished strong with 20 points against New Hampshire in the America East Tournament. She has been named to the America East All-Rookie Team and a UMaine Scholar-Athlete during her career.
Baranowski appeared in all 29 games last season and was a UMaine Scholar-Athlete Bronze Medalist. She tied for second on the team with a 76% free throw percentage and set a career high of 16 points in the 61-58 win at Albany last season.
Wheeler joins her Uncle Jeff, who was captain of the 1984-85 men's squad, in serving as a captain of a Maine basketball team. She became the Black Bears' first All-Conference selection since the 2006-07 season when she was named to the All-America East Third Team last season. Wheeler led the team last season with 10.8 points per game and 7.2 rebounds per game. She was also a UMaine Scholar-Athlete Bronze Medalist.
Williams appeared in 27 games last season and scored a career high 13 points against Stephen F. Austin on December 30th. She also tied her career high of seven rebounds against New Hampshire in the America East Tournament. She was also named a UMaine Scholar-Athlete her freshman season.
The Black Bears open the regular season at Alfond Arena against Harvard on November 13th at noon.
