Team Effort Propels Women's Basketball to Win Over Husson

ORONO, Maine – A total team effort propelled the Maine women's basketball team to an 88-44 exhibition win over Husson. Maine had six players score in double figures and tally 26 steals.
Samantha Wheeler (Derry, N.H./Timberlane Regional) led both teams with 13 points, while Corinne Wellington (Rochester, N.Y./Wilson Magnet) recorded a double-double with 10 points and 11 boards. Samantha Baranowski (Stanhope, N.J./Lenape Valley Regional), Brittany Williams (Rochester, N.Y./Churchville-Chili), Ashleigh Roberts (Wilmington, Del./Concord) and Ali Nalivaika (Worcester, Mass./St. Peter Marian) also scored in double figures for the Black Bears.
The Maine defense allowed 44 points on 27% shooting. Maine forced 35 turnovers and recorded 26 steals to help them score 16 points off turnovers. Bethany Sevey was the only Eagle to score in double figures. She scored 10 points on four for 10 shooting. Noelle Lincoln and Marissa Albert added nine points for Husson.
Amber Smith (Ipswich, Mass./Ipswich) added eight points, six assists and led the team in steals with eight. Katelyn Vanderhoff (Lititz, Pa./Lancaster Mennonite) added seven steals and eight points to go along with her team-high nine assists.
The Black Bears dominated the glass pulling down 47 rebounds to Husson's 30. Seventeen of Maine's rebounds came on the offensive end and led to eight second-chance points. Nalivaika added eight rebounds to Wellington's game high 11, while Baranowski chipped in six boards.
Maine led 45-29 at half behind hot shooting from the post players. Wellington and Nalivaika led the team in the first half with eight points each. Roberts added seven more, and fellow guards Williams and Vanderhoff drained six points in the first period.
Wheeler scored only two points in the first half but tallied 11 in the second period to help Maine close out the game by a margin of 43-15. Baranowski also scored 10 of her 12 points in the second half.
The Black Bears will take the court next Saturday at the Alfond for their final exhibition game.
