Women's Ice Hockey Falls at Niagara, 3-1

NIAGARA UNIV., N.Y. - The University of Maine women's ice hockey team dropped a 3-1 decision to Niagara on Saturday afternoon. The Black Bears now sit at 4-4-0 on the season while Niagara picks up its first win and climbs to 1-4-0 on the season. Junior captain Dawn Sullivan (Enfield, Nova Scotia) scored the lone goal for the Black Bears, her first of the season.
Niagara jumped out to a 1-0 lead 3:51 into the contest when Kristen Richards broke in and beat Maine goaltender Brittany Ott (St. Clair Shores, Mich.) for her second goal of the season.
The Purple Eagles would tally another goal, 12:43 into the first period as Jessica Hitchcock hooked up with Jenna Hendrikx to give Niagara a 2-0 first period advantage.
Sullivan would get Maine on the board, 3:04 into the second
period as she notched her first goal of the season. With the Black
Bears skating on the power play, Ashley Norum (Fairbanks, Alaska)
was able to slide a pass to Sullivan who gathered the puck and
flicked a shot into the back of the Purple Eagle net, cutting the
Niagara lead in half. Brittany Dougherty (Chesterfield, Mich.) also
assisted on the goal for the Black Bears. The goal was
Maine's 12th power play goal of the season.
Niagara would answer 1:50 later when Daniela Dal Colle received a
feed from Autumn Stuntz and deposited the puck into the back of the
Black Bear net, regaining a two goal advantage for the Purple
Eagles.
Despite holding a 26-17 advantage on shots, including a 11-5 advantage in the third period, the Black Bears would fall by a score of 3-1 to the Purple Eagles.
Maine was 1-5 on the power play while they shut down Niagara on all four of their power play chances.
Ott made 14 saves in net for Maine as she falls to 3-3-0 on the season. Jenni Bauer made 25 saves for Niagara and picks up her first win of the season, moving her record to 1-3-1.
The Black Bears return to action when they open up Hockey East play on Saturday, Nov. 6 at the University of Connecticut. Puck drop is scheduled for 1 p.m.
