The Black Bear Summer Tribune: Julie Brosseau

From her personal perspective, Julie Brosseau shares an update on her 2017 summer adventures

In this summer series, members of the women's basketball team provide a first-person perspective on the adventures they've experienced during the summer of 2017.

Orono, Maine -- "I was really happy to be invited to join the Quebec Team to represent our province at the Francophone games that will take place beginning on July 21 in the Ivory Coast. I had the opportunity to travel with this team to Beunos Dias, in Argentina, as a good way to get to know each other better and play some basketball. We were staying in some kind of dorms; 5 people were in one room sharing the bathroom and the shower. The breakfast was served between 7 a.m. and 9 a.m., lunch from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m. and dinner from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m.

Thankfully for me, there was a McDonalds relatively near campus. One day, I decided to walk there with one of my teammates to get some coffee. Argentina's money is in pesos, which doesn't value as much as the American dollar. So, I looked at the menu and ordered two medium coffees for the price of 96 pesos. I looked at my teammate and said, "Oh, only 96, it looks like it's not expensive, since the value of the money is very low." I decided to pay using my credit card. It turns out that the two medium coffees at McDonalds were $8.00! I got so shocked that I started laughing. Let me tell you, I did appreciate this coffee.

It was my first time going in South America. I felt like I traveled for two days, but it only took us 10 hours of flight time to get there. It was actually winter season there, so as soon as the sun went down, it got really chilly. Everybody spoke Spanish and a few of them could understand a little bit of English. I was saying to myself, "I just started learning a new language, English, and now I need to learn a third one." The only words I could say were 'Hola' and 'Gracias'.

We were able to play some local teams. After each game, the opposing team would invite us to have a snack with them and share a little bit of each others experiences.

This trip really opened my eyes to many things. I have seen a lot and experienced a different living culture. I have to be honest, I was not expecting the way this trip turned out. I will always remember it!"
