Baseball Falls at Auburn

AUBURN, Ala. -- The University of Maine baseball team dropped a doubleheader at Auburn on Saturday afternoon. The Black Bears fell in the first game 12-3 and then dropped a close 4-3 decision in the second game. 

 

In the second game, Maine took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third inning. Troy Black (Mississauga, Ontario) singled and scored when Colin Gay (Franklin, Mass.) singled. 

 

The Tigers scored three runs in the bottom of the third inning highlighted by a Ryan Tella triple. Auburn added one more run in the bottom of the fourth inning to take a 4-1 lead. 

 

The Black Bears countered with two runs in the top of the sixth inning. Gay doubled and scored when Michael Fransoso (Portsmouth, N.H.) grounded out. Eric White (Brewer, Maine), who reached on an error, scored when Fran Whitten (Westborough, Mass.) singled to right field. 

 

Maine threatened in the eighth inning, but left the tying run at second base. Gay led the Maine offense with a pair of hits. 

 

A.J. Bazdanes (Nashua, N.H.) went five innings on the mound for Maine and allowed four runs, three of which were earned, on five hits. He surrendered the loss. Logan Fullmer (Lebanon, Pa.) pitched the final three innings and allowed a pair of hits. 

 

Michael O'Neal went 5.2 innings on the mound for Auburn and earns the win. Terrance Dedrick picked up the save. 

 

In the first game, Maine took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning when Michael Fransoso homered to right field. 

 

Auburn, however, answered with three runs in the bottom of the first inning on a pair of hits. The Tigers extended their lead to 4-0 when Jackson Burgreen doubled and Ryan Tella followed with a RBI single. Dan Glevenyak walked and scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the fourth inning.

 

Auburn made it 10-1 in the bottom of the fifth inning. Tella had a two-run single in the frame, while Garrett Cooper hit a two-run home run. 

 

Maine scored a pair of runs in the top of the seventh inning. Mike Connolly (Bridgewater, Mass.) and Gay each singled. Connolly scored when Sam Balzano (Portland, Maine) singled. Gay scored the second run of the inning when Fransoso reached on an error. 

 

Glevenyak walked and scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the seventh inning. Auburn capped the scoring in the bottom of the eighth inning. Rock Rucker walked and scored when Blake Austin doubled. 

 

Scott Heath (Westbook, Maine) got the start on the mound for the Black Bears. He went two innings and allowed four runs, two of which were earned, on five hits. He suffered the loss. D.J. Voisine (Plainville, Conn.) went 2.2 innings and allowed six runs on six hits. Burk FitzPatrick (Berwyn, Pa.) pitched 1.1 innings in his collegiate debut and allowed one run in 1.1 innings. Steve Trask (Saco, Maine) pitched a third of an inning and did not allow a hit. Jake Marks (Sarnia, Ontario) went the final 1.2 innings. He allowed one run on one hit. 

 

Rocky McCord got the start and went four innings for Auburn. He allowed one run on five hits. Justin Camp pitched the next four innings and earned the win. He moved to 1-0 on the young season. 

 

The two teams conclude their four-game weekend series with a single game on Sunday afternoon beginning at 12 noon.
