Baseball Falls to Auburn in the Ninth Inning
AUBURN, Ala. -- Damek Tomscha homered to lead off the bottom of the ninth inning and broke a 2-2 tie as Auburn University defeated the Maine in the baseball season-opener on Friday afternoon. It was the first of a four-game series between the two teams this weekend.
Maine took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning. Scott Heath (Westbrook, Maine) reached on an error and Alex Calbick (Burnaby, British Columbia) followed with a double. Heath scored when Mike Connolly (Bridgewater, Mass.) singled.
Auburn grabbed the lead in the bottom of the sixth inning. Jackson Burgree doubled to right field. He moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Dan Glevenyak . Burgree scored when Garrett Cooper doubled. Cooper scored when Damek Tomscha singled.
Maine threatened in the top of the ninth when Gay doubled with two outs, but was stranded at second base. Gay led the Maine offense with a pair of hits.
Tommy Lawrence (West Haven, Conn.) got the start on the mound for the Black Bears. He went seven innings and allowed two runs on seven hits while striking out four. Shaun Coughlin (Northford, Conn.) pitched the final inning. He falls to 0-1 on the season.
Daniel Koger got the start for Auburn. He went five innings and allowed one run on three hits. Terrance Dedrick picked up the win in relief.
The two teams play a doubleheader on Saturday starting at 1 PM in Auburn, Ala.
