Men's Ice Hockey adds Volunteer Assistant Coach Brad Schuler

ORONO, Maine – University of Maine men's ice hockey head coach Red Gendron has announced the addition of volunteer assistant coach Brad Schuler to his staff.

"We are delighted to add Brad to our staff," Gendron said. "He possesses college hockey experience as an assistant coach at Middlebury and as a terrific player at Skidmore College. He is a tremendous teacher with unrivaled passion for hockey and for coaching. Additionally, his undergraduate background in both exercise science and psychology will be of great value to UMaine hockey."

Schuler joins the Black Bears with 10 years of coaching experience, four years of college playing experience and a 2014 stint in pro hockey.

"I am grateful for the opportunity to be part of the Black Bears' community and look forward to working with Coach Gendron, Coach Guite, Coach Michaud, the players and the rest of the staff," Schuler said. "Their passion and commitment to UMaine hockey is contagious."

Most recently, Schuler served as an assistant at Middlebury College. Aside from assisting at Middlebury, Schuler also served as the school's head junior varsity coach where he oversaw all operations of the JV program.

From 2013-15, Schuler spent his summers as a coach at Westlake Hockey School in Mistissini, Que. While at Westlake, he developed and taught training techniques and nutrition strategies to athletes on the Cree Native American Reserve. Furthermore at Westlake, Schuler launched a hockey camp by training and educating eight local coaches to ensure smooth training sessions for 40 hockey athletes at a camp in Doha, Qatar.

Since 2007, Schuler has evaluated, identified and recruited elite players from the US and Canada as a coach and scout at Legacy Global Sports – Selects Hockey program.

Schuler was a captain and earned a most valuable player accolade during his four-years as a member of the Skidmore College Thoroughbreds hockey team. Following his time at Skidmore, Schuler was signed on to join the Denver Cutthroats during its Central Hockey League playoff run in 2014. After his run with Denver, Schuler spent the fall of 2014 as a defenseman for the Huntsville Havoc of the Southern Professional Hockey League.
