ORONO, Maine -- University of Maine women's ice hockey right wing Tereza Vanisova has been named the Czech Republic's Female Hockey Player of the Year.
In her freshman season at UMaine, Vanisova finished the 2016-17 season with 16 goals and 12 assists in 28 games. Out of her 28 points, 20 came in Hockey East action where she finished league play with 10 goals and 10 assists. Vanisova, who was named the Hockey East's Co-Rookie of the Year, missed four games of her collegiate season when she traveled back to her native Czech Republic to compete with her national team. Following the UMaine season, Vanisova continued her national team competition when she traveled to Switzerland to compete in the Olympic qualifying tournament before taking part in the World Championships in Michigan.
Vanisova tallied five goals in six games at the World Championships, tying her for most goals in the tournament with Kendall Coyne of the United States, and added two assists in three games at the Olympic qualifiers.
Despite playing in only 28 games during her freshman season with the Black Bears, Vanisova led the team in goals (16), was third in assists (12) and tied for the team-lead with 28 points. Her four power-play goals ranked first on the team while she matched an individual team best with a pair of game-winners.
David Pastrnak, of the Boston Bruins, was named the Czech Republic's Male Hockey Player of the Year.
